(MESQUITE, TEXAS – JUNE 26, 2017) – Today, Historic Mesquite, Inc. (HMI) announced its inclusion in the Blue Star Museums program, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more than 2,000 museums across America.

The program allows museums to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families through Labor Day and provides families an opportunity to enjoy the nation’s cultural heritage and learn more about their community, especially after a military move.  A list of participating museums is available at arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.

“We are so honored to be included in this wonderful program for those who take care of us,” said Charlene Orr, executive director of Historic Mesquite, Inc (HMI).  “This is a way to show our appreciation for the personal sacrifices these families make while their loved ones are on duty.”

This year’s Blue Star Museums represent not just history museums but fine arts, science children’s museums and nature centers.  Other Dallas-area participating museums include: Dallas Heritage Village, Dallas Museum of Art and the George W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum.

The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), a DD Form 1173 ID card or a DD Form 1173-1ID card, which includes active duty U.S. military – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, as well as members of the National Guard and Reserve, U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps – and up to five family members.

Although veterans of the U.S. Military are not included in the official program, HMI is offering the same free admission to them as well, along with up to five family members.  Tour dates and times are:  Opal Lawrence Historical Park, 711 E. Kearney St., (972) 216-6471, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; Florence Ranch Homestead, 1424 Barnes Bridge Rd., (972) 204-4933, 10:30 to 3:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday.  The HMI office number is (972) 216-6468.

Volunteers and staff at each location will have samples of the type of ID honored by the program.  Veterans are welcome to bring any type ID that shows service.

Blue Star Families is a national, nonprofit network of military spouses, children, parents and friends, as well as service members, veterans and civilians, dedicated to supporting, connecting and empowering military families.  Visit bluestarfam.org for more information.

The Mesquite museums will be added to the list of participating venues in the next update of the program, which will be June 28, 2017.  Visit the website above – arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.
